Jennifer Bleakney racked up an assist and a goal in SU's season-opening win.

No. 5 Syracuse (1-0) opened its season Friday with a 2-0 victory over California (0-1).

Freshman Borg van der Velde began her career at Syracuse with a shutout in net. The Golden Bears only challenged her four times, with no shots on goal. She replaced Regan Spencer, who ranked ninth in the country in goals allowed per game last season.

Senior Lies Lagerweij followed up her All-American junior campaign scoring just four minutes into Friday’s contest. Erin Gillingham and Jennifer Bleakney assisted on the goal.

At the 57-minute mark, Bleakney scored SU’s second goal on the assist from last year’s All-American, Roos Weers.

SU opened the season predicted to finish tied for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with Duke, with both clubs finishing just behind North Carolina.

Friday’s game was the first of a three-game California road trip. SU faces Pacific (1-0) on Sunday and UC Davis (0-0) on Monday.
